| History of Mungret Regional FC 1971 - 2001
Mungret AFC was founded in 1971 when a team
was entered to play in the Desmond League and home pitch was the
Sports and Social Club grounds of Irish Cement. In 1972 the County
Council gave the Club the use of the pitch that it is still using
today, and at that time the Club also had the use of the area
that is currently used by the neighboring GAA Club. In 1982, the
Club purchased the plot on which the Clubhouse is sited today,
the Clubhouse being opened in 1984.
The playing area known as the back pitch
has been leased from Irish Cement since 1985. Also around this
time the Club joined with Regional FC to combine the resources
at schoolboy and junior level and this gave rise to the name Mungret
Regional FC. Later, Regional FC was reformed. Mungret Regional
FC went from strength to strength and the Clubhouse was extended
to include the existing dressing rooms, meeting room and stores
in 1989.
The 10 years from 1988 to 1998 were a purple
patch for the Club on the field:
1988 Premier League Champions
1992 Munster Youths Cup Runners-up
1994 Munster Junior Cup Winners
1996 FAI Junior Cup Runners-up
1997 Munster Junior Cup Runners-up
Numerous schoolboy trophies were also picked up over the years.
In 1997, the Club decided to convert the ground
at the rear of the Clubhouse into an all-weather training area.
Ground levels were raised, a fine-dust surface was laid and high
netting and floodlights were installed.
During the 1990s the Mungret Regional
soccer nursery was started and by 2001 the Club has teams from
under-8 to under-16, plus junior mens and junior ladies teams.
